Providing Educational Opportunities To Deserving Yreka High School Graduates Since 1964
It began as a desire to provide monies for Yreka High School graduates who needed financial help in attending college. In 1964 a group of far-sighted local business and professional men and an educator met and decided to form an organization that would garner grant and scholarship monies to be awarded to deserving graduates of merit depending upon their need. Thus United Scholarships, Inc. was formed to meet the needs of graduating Seniors of Yreka High School in funding their higher education goals.
The standards of excellence set then remain still today: a GPA of at least 3.00. A select, unannounced committee reviews each student's achievements, ambitions, and financial need, then reports to the Board of Directors who awards the monies. Funds are also set aside for continuing education and second, third, and fourth year recipients are invited to apply for this financial help. A recent generous bequest has also allowed the giving of an 'incentive' award for those students with a GPA of 2.5 and seeking a trade or non-technical career.
The awards are presented to the top students each May before commencement ceremonies.
Since its inception, U.S.I. has awarded over $1,400,000 to almost 1500 graduates.
Although U.S.I. has a carefully tended investment portfolio, of which only profits are used, it still seeks bequests, grants, and donations to help these deserving students handle the ever escalating costs of higher education.Home | Donations | News and Events | Application Forms | Newsletters
